Basic Instructions for Using NYSID's Scanners

The Library maintains two types of flatbed scanners: two Microtek 11 x 17" scanners and 3 Canon 8 1/2 x 11"
scanners.  They use different software, so follow the links below for the scanner you will be using.

Guide to Scanning (Microtek Scanmaker 9800XL)

  1. Be sure the scanner is turned ON. The power switch is located on the right hand side of the back of the scanner.

  1. Put the original face down on the scanner glass bed.

  1. Click Start → Programs → Adobe Photoshop CS2 → File Import → Microtek Scan Wizard Pro. ScanWizard Pro is started from Adobe Photoshop CS2. The image is delivered to Photoshop after the final scan.

  1. Preview window opens. This window displays an overview scan of the original.

  1. Overview performs a low-resolution preview of the entire original scan material. Prescan performs a high resolution preview of the selected scan frame.

  1. Click the Overview button to start an overview; you will see the image appear in your Preview window.

  1. Select the Scan Frame tool from the toolbar in the preview window and choose the area to be scanned by dragging a rectangle around it. You may adjust this rectangle to fit the area that you want to scan. You will see a flashing frame (marquee) around the selected area.

  1. Choose the image resolution. Go to the Settings window and enter the resolution value in the Resolution edit box. We recommend using a resolution of 300 ppi for most scans. Consult Selecting Resolution for further guidance.

  1. If you are scanning an image from a newspaper or magazine use the Descreen tool, located near the bottom of the Settings window. From the drop-down menu, select your source material. The Descreen tool removes “screens” or moiré patterns from appearing in images. Moirés are interface patterns that show up on your scanned images when you scan images from magazines and newspapers.

  1. Click the Scan button to start scanning.

  1. The image is delivered to Adobe Photoshop. You must close the ScanWizard Pro software before you can edit and save the image.

ScanGear CS is the scanner driver that instructs your computer how to scan items. It should always be started from Adobe Photoshop CS2. The image is delivered to Photoshop after the final scan. ScanGear CS features three modes: the Simple Mode, Advanced Mode, and Multi Scan. We suggest using the Advanced Mode.

  1. In the newer version of ScanGear CS (LIB-03) set the Descreen option to ON when you are scanning photos or pictures from print publications, such as books or magazines. In the older versions of ScanGear CS the Descreen option is found under the Settings tab. Check it on or off.

  1. Click the Scan button to start scanning.
